Jonathan Ling is a training and education expert delivering work-based learning in engineering and project management. He is particularly successful in working productively in enhancing the skills base and knowledge-base of individuals in the working environment. An experienced academic manager, physicist and engineer, he has worked within the field of engineering education and professional development for many years, heading Academic Standards at the IMechE and later the Accreditation Department at the IEE (now IET) and then Director of Professional Development at IET. He led accreditation teams at universities both within the UK and to the Middle East, Singapore, Malaysia and the West Indies. More recently he has managed important aspects of the Engineering Gateways Project, a government funded project at the Engineering Council UK, established to increase the number of highly skilled engineers into the profession through a new MSc in Professional Engineering.

He obtained his first degree in Physics at London University, and later studied part-time for an MSc in Electronics.

Having taught Physics and Engineering Science in the Further and Higher Education Sectors of UK Education and undertaken research and development in the nuclear and electronics industries in the seventies, he established and ran the Hertfordshire Science Centre and later the SATRO (now SET Point, Hertfordshire) in the late eighties and early nineties, before becoming Field Director of the Engineering Education Scheme: a national scheme to attract young people into engineering, established through Lord Sainsbury's Gatsby Charitable Foundation and administered by the Royal Academy of Engineering. Jonathan has always taken a keen interest in Science and Engineering Education, becoming the ASE's (Association for Science Education) Honorary Secretary for its Annual Conference for five years in the mid to late nineties.

For most of the nineties Jonathan was Director of Studies for Physical Sciences at the University of Hertfordshire, establishing many new and innovative degree programmes and chairing all boards of examiners in Physics, Astrophysics and Astronomy at Undergraduate and Masters level. He also developed innovative self-study science and engineering science programmes. As a QAA reviewer in Physics and Astronomy, he reviewed degree programmes in these subjects at Oxford, Lancaster, Nottingham and Staffordshire Universities in the late nineties and early 2000s.

Jonathan takes a great interest in Commonwealth affairs, having been selected by BESO (British Executive Services Overseas) to develop the Physics Department at University of Buea, Cameroon with a view to establishing an Engineering Department during 1995. He is currently an active member of CASTME (Commonwealth Association of Science, Technology and Mathematics Educators) in Association with the Commonwealth Office.
